“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”**

There was a press conference this afternoon with the mayor, the city manager, the superintendent, and assorted city council and school committee members to announce the summer 2011 capital improvements. I've included the final list below:

Burncoat High School
Restroom renovation, locker replacement, ceiling repair, and painting
Doherty High School
Restroom renovation, AP chemistry lab, science prep room, chemistry lab, flooring
replacement, painting, refinish gymnasium flooring (including restriping), repair
water fountains, limited corridor door and hardware replacement, paint exterior
canopy, interior stair repair, locker replacement, and locker room restroom
renovation
South High School
Restroom renovation, flooring at open classrooms and stairwells, painting, repair
water fountains, new intrusion system and locker replacement
Worcester East Middle School*
Restroom renovations, new science lab, paving (completed 2010), painting, new
flooring, locker replacement, water fountain repair, conversion of chalkboards to
whiteboards, and new cafeteria flooring and renovation.
Union Hill School*
Restroom renovation, painting, new flooring, school courtyard preparation for
playground equipment, water fountain repair, and conversion of chalkboards to
whiteboards.
Chandler Community School
Restroom renovation, painting, new flooring at open classrooms, water fountain
repair, and conversion of chalkboards to whiteboards.
Goddard School of Science and Technology
Restroom renovations, painting, water fountain repair, new flooring, lockerr
replacement and conversion of chalkboards to whiteboards
Flagg Street School
Restroom renovations, flooring, painting, ceiling repair, water fountain repair
Clark Street Elementary
Restroom repair, new flooring, painting, replace casework in classrooms, water
fountain repair, paving (2010 and 2011) and locker replacement.
Tatnuck Magnet
Restroom renovations, painting, new flooring, water fountains repair, and
conversion of chalkboards to whiteboards

*I heard a bit about each of these today: the floor of the Union Hill first building basement has been completely taken up; a new floor is being poured. Those basement bathrooms have been ripped out to the walls. At Worcester East Middle, the carpeting is being taken up (yes, there were wooden floors under there), and there's lots of painting going on. Good stuff!
