State Student Advisory Council
for some reason, they never link to the presentation from the SSAC on these...I wish they would
used extensive amounts of data in their work
host successful regional and statewide stakeholder engagement events
flow of information going in both directions
updates on work on the Board; given opportunity by student rep to Board to ask questions
there will be a written final report of their work shared with Board (and public but how?)
on bullying: recommend adoption of standardized definitions and reporting processes, increasing access to trusted adult, and expanding education and awareness
on emotional well being: comprehensive approaches to emotional development and well-being implemented by all districts
More flex block time and designated mental health days
stronger sense of student belonging, importance of sleep!
on nutrition: building relationships with local farms
investing in training and resources for food service staff
plan menus and test recipes to reflect cultural diversity of communities
There is some general support about flex time
Martinez notes that they still meet time on learning requirements
goal is to take recommendations, look at current work, raise best practices
Notes that recommendations go back to regions as well
We are now having what I regard as the annual 'gosh we should have some way of integrating the work of the SSAC in our work" conversation, which I have to say doesn't seem to change anything...
Secretary suggests the regional roundtables of superintendents working with SSAC regionals
If you wondered if school committees having regionals came up, you would be correct if you guessed it did not.
Stewart makes a motion to accept the report; Craven says "as an informal vote, I agree" and asks that the minutes reflect that...which is not at all how that works.
