June 2026 Board of Ed: Civics

 Super weird to me that the update includes this "look this curriculum is everywhere"

civics law passed in 2018

student-led civics projects

Oddly, this presentation is from iCivics, not from DESE staff or school district people, or...this is kind of weird;

"goal of schooling is produced informed engaged citizens"
"health of our constitutional democracy requires sustained commitment"
now speaking about the We Declare! challenge

Here's the Boston Green Academy winning video

Ashfield Middle School in Brockton:

Amesbury Middle School

discussion here around if MA will participate in coming NAEP civics test

oh, and now they're doing to do the actual report on actual civics in Massachusetts
We're getting grade 8 civics MCAS results and NAEP results
Civics Project Trust fund; $6M awarded since FY21; PD, curriculum, and experiential learning
(I'd be interested in what the experiential learning has been!)
"support for real-world civic action" is explicitly part of the state standards
they're citing here the civics project showcases, but I always think of this when kids organize walkouts or protests or advocacy in their districts...be careful what you say is important! Also, no mention of the bills that came from civics projects

West jumps into analysis of civics MCAS data, Martinez speaks of "uncovering the practices" behind the data
