Board of Ed: CTE admission subcommittee

chaired by West who starts by thanking everyone
"are changes needed to promote more access" to vocational schools in the Commonwealth
this is West, Fisher, Rocha, Hills

asked to see all regional agreement, admission policy, monitoring of admission
comparison of school by school admissions
thank DESE for "voluminous amount of data"
crux of issue is on admission criteria and if that creates dispropriate impact
asked for more data
understand source of any disparities that are seen
data that the Department has not previously worked with
understand legal challenges with sharing data with districts when it includes identifiable information of students not in district
committed to moving forward "as quickly as we can but not so quickly that we rush to a half-baked solution"

Craven: "is there an issue with getting anonymized data from our own agency"
West: no, it isn't about the Department
"if not the data, the learning from the data"

Moriarty thinks real tension between transparency and "doing our job"
this is classic "I'm just asking questions here" not usefully
Hills "moving quickly...getting to heart of issue"
Rocha: timeline on getting information
West: data Department has not worked with before; admission policies vary from school to school
much of data is school by school
"aggregate data isn't particularly informative"
"should manage expectation on when we're going to have a report from the Department"
yeah, because that sounds like you're creating an entire additional job there
We're getting a great illustration of the classic "do you want them to write you reports or do their jobs?"

Fisher: comment made last night and want to address full board
if there is disproportionality, what is it?
what selective criteria if any is essential to the program of study?
"I think we're looking at several aspects of this now"
