Marketing WPS

Continue efforts to work with T&G, maybe a monthly "As I See It"
TV channels
radio
Yearly state of education report

ah...using our website (I just tried to figure out the details on Burncoat High School's production of Fame next week, and it's not on there.)

working with colleges and universities, maybe a video?
at middle schools, treat as private schools: invite parents to open houses as early as 5th grade (now this would be a great idea, as lots of parents want to get in there earlier)

Update in January, please

I hope that there will be more discussion of 'marketing' the public schools. When we were researching school options for our older son, I found that even the smallest parochial schools had more information on their websites than the Worcester Public Schools. (HINT: if the only thing I can find out about a school on your website is the DOE School Report Card and the School Improvement Plan, that is NOT going to make me want to send my kid to that school. It's just going to depress me.)

I don't want to have to go to the Parent Information Center to have to find out basic information about a school, and I think there are a lot of parents of potential public school students who feel the same way.

We won't be sending our older son to a public school. That decision doesn't necessarily have to do with something the WPS could be doing differently, but -- as far as initial research into schools went -- the information provided on the website went a decent way in ruling them out.

The Burncoat Fine Arts Magnet Extravaganza (FAME) will be held November 17 at 7pm in the Burncoat Middle School Auditorium. Please come and enjoy this showcase of student talent in music, theatre, dance and art. Tickets are available at the door.

I enjoy reading "College Town" - the collection of news from the different colleges in town which is published in the T&G. Could we get a public school version of this to highlight what's happening in the schools?

Thank you for finding the Fame posting! I wish I didn't have a meeting that night.
I think the College Town idea is a fine one...I wonder if the Consortium pays for that or sets it up or how it works? Worth looking into!

Traci- did anyone mention the former publication The WOrcester Educator? This was paid for with Title I Parent Involvement Funds. The district even won an award for this newspaper. If you need to see any old copies you can check with the Title I secretary.

Yes, they did...there was a mention that there used to be a special section, and someone asked how this was done, at which point there was the response that it was done through a grant.
