Coming up around the state

* This Saturday, May 7, 4-6 p.m. Come to a screening of the
documentary film TEACH, with directors Bob and Yvonne Lamothe, at Food
for Thought Books, 106 N. Pleasant St., Amherst, MA. For more

* Tuesday, May 10, 5 p.m. Rennie Center Forum on Teacher Evaluation,
Omni Parker House Hotel, Kennedy Room. Commissioner Chester will
provide an overview of the recommendations being considered by the
BESE and a panel representing teacher, principal, superintendent,
business, and union perspectives will discuss opportunities and
challenges. Audience members will join the conversation via live

* Saturday, May 14, 3 and 7 p.m. Come to a screening of the film
August to June: Bringing Life to School, Somerville Theater, $5
AUGUST TO JUNE is an 88-minute documentary celebrating values we are
on the brink of losing in the single-minded pursuit of higher test
scores! Come inside a public school happily and purposefully going
against current trends and join 26 8-10 year olds, their teacher, and
their parents for a year bursting with opportunities for curiosity,
creativity and compassion.

Each screening will be followed by a panel and group discussion with
local leaders in education and politics.

* Thursday, May 26, 10 – 11:30 a.m. Speak Out for Public Education:
Rally and Press Conference, Harvard Square (in “The Pit,” behind Out
of Town News).

While Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, is inside Harvard Yard
performing as Chief Marshal of his 25th Harvard Class Reunion, a group
of prominent educators and public school teachers will be outside the
ivied walls offering a public critique of his policies.

Speakers include Centro Presente, Prof. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, Whitney
Elliot, Alfie Kohn, Deborah Meier, Merrie Najimy, Monty Neill, Ruth
Rodriguez Fay, Larry Aaronson.
