Uniform policy at Union Hill and Chandler Elementary

current Worcester Public School policy requires that there is a vote of the site council and a 2/3 majority of parents
what we have is a letter from principals that mentions that parents were "overwhelmingly in favor" at meetings
Boone says parents wanted it because of a sense of pride in their school
Novick runs through the research: it does nothing other than improve perception of student behavior and that's it
Biancheria asks if we can hold this item until the 16th (she notes that there are only seven school days until the 16th)
motion to hold supercedes, is voted first, goes four/two, Biancheria and Novick against
motion to carry forward pending parent signatures and site council approval:five/one

  1. Here's my problem with school uniforms. Even if you go with a polo and khakis. There are a lot of poor families in that part of the city. A lot of those families don't buy new school clothes. They buy clothes on an as needed basis. Forcing them to go out and buy new clothing isn't going to help their situation. I grew up poor and this comes entirely from personal experience. Most years I didn't go to school with new clothing. I went to school.
