Magnetism

If you're interested in reading more, per today's T&G article on deisolation, of the effect of magnet schools on students, I'd recommend this research brief from the National Coalition on School Diversity.
Two things of note:
  • magnet schools are schools that parents choose to send their kids to (usually due to the programs offered). Thus the desegregation and deisolation that happens occurs as a byproduct of parents opting in.
  • magnet schools generally improve results for all kids, including those who often would be more academically advantaged.

  1. My only two cents is that Magnet schools wok bc parents have to sign their kids up and that mere act makes a huge difference in parent involvement. Look at UPCS too.

  2. ...selection bias. What's interesting is that, at least in the research I linked to, when they controlled for selection bias, the magnet kids still did better. Fascinating.

  3. is the simplistic solutin to spread the remianing white kids around? or to up the number of hispanic white and non-white that attend schools with low hispanic enrollment? what about pulling in white kids form the burbs in a reverse metco?
